Third Friday Potluck Shabbat

We can't promise whether the month is coming in like a lion or going out like a lamb. But we can say that this Shabbat will, as always, be fueled by kindness, light, and delicious food.

Please sign up for dinner at OneTable: https://bit.ly/2G0rhQi.
This helps us keep dinner free, organic, and local!

Per usual, we'll begin with an optional silent meditation at 6:30 (if you come in the middle of this, pretty please come join us, or otherwise try to keep the space quiet!), and then open up at 7:00 into the melodies and language of Kabbalat Shabbat.

It's all followed by a delicious communal kosher dairy dinner around 8:00, thanks to Katie and Nate! BYOB. If you have dietary restrictions, please holler at Katie in advance.

Want to help make a feast that is infused with love and kindness? Talk to Katie, Nate, or Aharon about how you can contribute your skills to make Havayah a stronger community.

Erev Yom Kippur + Yom Kippur
Oct
8
to Oct 9

Erev Yom Kippur + Yom Kippur

Erev Yom Kippur, Oct. 8: Candlelighting (as a community) at 6:50. Services begin promptly at 7 p.m. and should conclude by 9 p.m.

RSVP and let us know you’re coming.

Yom Kippur, Oct. 9: Services begin at 10 a.m., go until 2/3 p.m., and reconvene at 5 p.m. Yizkor will occur at the conclusion of morning services. We'll conclude the evening's services with Havdalah and a break-fast.

RSVP and let us know you’re coming.

Potluck break-fast at 7:40 p.m.: We'll provide kosher homemade bialys, cream cheese and the fixings along with plentiful water! Please feel free to bring something to share that is vegan and nut-free. Note that refrigerator space is limited, so please consider bringing a potluck item that does not require refrigeration or take up extensive fridge space. We do not provide serving utinsils or space to heat up outside food.

Attire: Wear what makes you comfortable! We strongly suggest white attire if you have it, but if that breaks the bank or isn't practical, just wear what works for you. We're informal folks. Bring your own tallit (prayer shawl) if you have one and it's your practice to wear one. Consider not wearing leather accessories or shoes.

Prayer book: We use Machzor Eit Ratzon, which has a fair bit of flipping back and forth involved. We'll call page numbers and you won't be lost. It is fully transliterated, so you'll be able to follow the Hebrew at your own pace.

Not fasting? No stress: We know that people can't fast for a variety of medical or other health reasons and that it can feel weird to need to find a private place to step aside and eat your nosh or sip from a water bottle on Yom Kippur. It's ok! We'll have a designated eating area upstairs and will provide water and fresh fruit.

Got questions? Let us know!

How to: Tu BiShvat

Havaya's Halakha of the Holiday with Adath Israel

Tu B'-what?

Tu BiShvat.

Friends, it's a mitzvah to learn the halakhas of every holiday one month prior to its observance. In this series, we will be building our spiritual muscles for the upcoming holiday with a meaningful guide to its observance and how it speaks to our lives today.

We are excited to welcome rabbis from Adath Israel Congregation to facilitate the class. The first session, facilitated by Rabbi Ben Chaidell, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8 and will prepare us for a fruitful (no pun intended) Tu BiShvat.

The following sessions will be facilitated by Rabbi Irvin Wise, senior rabbi of Adath Israel, and Bailey Romano. All will be held at the Bayit with light refreshments. Join us to explore the "way we walk" (that's what halakha means) for each holiday!
